Everyone who has ever bought a piece of diamond jewelry knows that this sparkling stone is quite an expensive pleasure, and that its price is determined by four main characteristics, the so-called 4Cs: weight measured in carats, cut (the type of faceting), color, and clarity. In addition, a larger stone must have an international gemological certificate (such as GIA or HRD) and be registered in their database. All of this sounds wonderful, but then comes the moment when you actually need to buy diamond jewelry, and perhaps it won’t be a 1.0 or even a 0.5 carat stone at all. What if your piece is decorated only with small diamonds? At this point, there are two possible paths. Whichever one you choose, you will definitely need the basic information mentioned above. But one path you walk through with doubt and exhaustion, while the other you walk calmly and comfortably.
Path One
You start gathering information from friends and acquaintances, while at the same time your phone fills up with screenshots from online stores. You compare everything, but still there are countless blind spots in the whole process. Then you discover that not only the 4Cs matter — polishing quality, fluorescence, proportions and many other details also affect the value. You learn that stones under 0.25 carats are not certified by well-known laboratories. You realize that moissanite can look almost identical to a diamond, and you begin wondering how to avoid dishonest sellers and “experts” who seem to multiply like mushrooms. You filter, investigate, try to find a “good” stone or stones at a favorable value… and slowly this turns into unpleasant tension. You become tired. Finally, you find a piece of jewelry — and yet doubt keeps gnawing at you.
Path Two
You decide which professional service you trust, pay for the consultation, and receive thorough information and advice even about the smallest details. This saves you time and nerves. And most importantly, you end up with exactly the jewelry you truly like and want.
Dear friends, take my advice:
Whichever path you choose, either you adjust the jewelry to your budget, or you choose a piece whose value truly reflects its quality. This is an axiom. The value of every diamond, in every country, is determined by international pricing standards known to every professional dealer and seller. This means that identical stones will never differ drastically in value without a serious reason.
P.S. If you and your friend bought similar diamond jewelry at different values, know that the similarity is only in visible size and weight. The differences that caused the variation can be seen only under a loupe.
P.P.S. This post does not discuss natural versus laboratory-grown diamonds. This is a very relevant and fascinating topic. But we will talk about it another time.
With love and respect
